The Net (1995)

You have to love when Hollywood tries to meet the moment of something new entering society. 1995’s The Net is such a wonderful misunderstanding of the internet of the time, yet it also feels so timely in 2026. The luminous Sandra Bullock is a systems analyst who puts the wrong disk from a friend into her computer and finds her entire life erased. You’ll have to remember the internet was still brand new at the time with it really only starting to gain a foothold in the previous two years, and most homes didn’t have any access at all. Plus, Ms. Bullock’s character orders a pizza online, something still a couple of years away from being viable. And somehow, a movie that seemed farfetched in 1995 feels like everyday life in 2026. Who doesn’t worry about hackers getting into their accounts and wiping them out or stealing their identity? A movie that was worried about the present is far better in the future. It’s the epitome of the 90s technothriller, and boy does it look like the 90s with how it’s shot and the blown-out lighting at times. Don’t let that dissuade you, hop on the information superhighway and cruise over to The Net.
