Goldeneye (1995)

Everyone has a favorite James Bond. For most people, it’s probably Sean Connery. But if there was a second person who was born to be Bond, it’s Pierce Brosnan. He finally got his chance in 1995’s Goldeneye. He originally was going to be Bond about ten years earlier when he was starring on Remington Steele on TV, which had been cancelled. NBC brought the show back because of the Bond talk, which kept Mr. Brosnan from taking the role. His first Bond movie is still his best. It’s a movie that tried to bring Bond into the 90s, with a computer-centric plot and an adversary that mirrors Bond himself. It also addressed Bond’s treatment of women with Bond girl Izabella Scorupco telling him exactly why he’s always alone. It had been six years since Bond was last seen in Licence to Kill, and the world had drastically changed in that time. The Cold War had ended, and the question was asked, did the world still need James Bond? Goldeneye showed why it does. The box office proved people were starved for Bond’s return. It has everything you want from a Bond movie, big stunts and a great travelogue. In 2026, it’s been four years since the last Bond movie, and again we are back in that same type of waiting period that happened between 1989 and 1995 for the next one. You can only hope when the world needs saving, Bond will return.
