There were a lot of things going on with America in 1993\. Bill Clinton was in his first term as president. Grunge had taken over rock. The X-Files premiered. The internet was starting to gain a foothold in American homes. None of that explains why Pauly Shore was considered a movie star. Well, maybe that internet thing does. Disney’s Hollywood Pictures was desperate to keep Mr. Shore from going to another studio, so it rushed Son in Law into production. Mr. Shore was considered a breakout from the movie Encino Man. Studios were actually clamoring to get him into a movie. That’s where Son in Law comes along. There’s not so much a plot, it’s more or less just a reason to put Mr. Shore into situations where he shows South Dakota why California surfer dudes are cool. Carla Gugino plays the Midwestern girl corrupted by being in Los Angeles, and Mr. Shore goes home with her for Thanksgiving. It’s still got some 80s-style life lessons learned to play out. Son in Law proved to be a hit, and Mr. Shore spent the rest of the 90s being given movies that critics hated. It’s probably the best of Mr. Shore’s movies and that’s not intended to be a snarky line. It’s perfectly fine for light entertainment if you are looking for something that’s not trying to change the world or requires you to do any critical thinking. Just don’t expect Mr. Shore to be the Gen-X version of Jimmy Stewart.
