It’s not often you get to use the phrase “sleazy masterpiece” but it’s the perfect term for 1995’s Showgirls. Paul Vehoeven’s story of Las Vegas showgirls and the drama in their lives. If you were not around in 1995, you have no idea what kind of controversy there was over Jessie from Saved by the Bell showing everything Zack never got to see on the big screen. Elizabeth Berkley wanted to show she was more than a Saturday morning actress, and did she show it. All of it. The cast also includes Kyle MacLachlan riding in off Twin Peaks, Gina Gershon, and Robert Davi. It was given a NC-17 rating for its highly sexual content, though looking at it in 2026, it feels tame. However, in 1995, it was scandalous just going into the video store to rent a copy of the VHS. The video rental market is what saved it though, because it was a major bomb in the theater but a massive home video hit. Is Showgirls any good? Does it matter? Whether or not it was good wasn’t the reason people watched it. It’s still not the reason to watch it. If nothing else, it’s worth looking back to the mid-90s to understand where we were as a country and see how more accepting of adult material society has become.
