# Porky's (1982)

If you want one movie to blame for the 80s fascination with the teen sex comedy, 1982’s Porky’s is the movie to blame. It was the fifth biggest hit of the year. And even bigger in the early days of the home video market. The movie draws its name from the strip club a bunch of Florida teenagers in the 50s want to get into. Looking at the actors who played them, they shouldn’t have had any trouble, because not a single one of them looked like they had been 17 in at least 20 years. There’s a lot of things going on in this movie at all times. Though a plot is not really one of them. Outside of trying to get into the strip club, the rest of the movie is full of just hijinks it thinks is funny. One thing is for sure, 2026 would be aghast at the shower scene, which is Porky’s most famous scene, and the one played up in ads and on the movie poster. There’s a young Kim Cattrall here who is wasted on a scene that’s not funny, even though the movie thinks it’s hilarious. And here’s the thing. So did audiences of 1982\. The question is, it is worth it in 2026? From a historical perspective, it very much is. Porky’s is from the era where nudity and sex were the selling point, before the internet made those things impossible to avoid, even if you wanted to. Porky’s would go on to spawn, if that’s the right word, two sequels, including one turned around for release a year later. Hollywood loves to chase hits. Porky’s helped launch the raunch for the years following. Every high school movie with nudity had Porky’s to thank for it getting made. A number of them even copied the shower scene. No one ever said Hollywood worried about innovation. Porky’s is a Saturday night kind of movie when the kids are gone. It would be the perfect movie for a drive-in if they still existed in the way they once did. Porky’s was a movie made for that era. It’s part of a time capsule where you can watch, and realize how unlikely something like it would get made today.
