# Mannequin (1987)

If you can say one thing about 80s cinema, it was willing to take chances. 1987’s Mannequin might have been the most ludicrous concept to come to a theater, until Weekend at Bernie’s two years later. Kim Cattrall is the spirit of an ancient Egyptian who somehow gets put into a mannequin and comes to life for Andrew McCarthy. Now, 2026 would already have a problem with a white woman playing an Egyptian and that’s not a wrong take. However, that’s not the most unbelievable part of this movie. It was trashed by critics at the time and was a running joke on Mystery Science Theater 3000 for years. But it was a hit and a big enough hit to lead to a sequel in Mannequin 2: On the Move. And it is another example of the power of movies and music. Starship’s Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now was its big song and it was a smash on the Billboard charts. The number one job of any movie is to entertain. Believe it or not, Mannequin knows its job and gets it done. No one in 2026 would write a movie with this type of premise and think it would get made. But that’s Mannequin’s charm. Studios were willing to take big swings on unconventional comedies. The world is better because 20th Century Fox made it and put it into theaters. Is it believable? Not in the slightest. But who cares, it’s fun for what it is. The best way to enjoy Mannequin is on VHS to really put yourself in the 80s mindset. That’s a lot harder done in 2026, since VCRs haven’t been made in years, and modern HDTVs don’t play nice with them anyway. Mannequins may freak you out at department stores, but you’ll never look at one the same way after you see Mannequin. You might just wonder if there’s a spirit stuck in there just waiting to ride a motorcycle with you.
