There’s never been a movie that illustrated the pain of high school love like 1986’s Lucas. Corey Haim is in his best role as a high schooler in love with Kerri Green’s cheerleader Maggie. And Maggie is a cheerleader because she thinks it will get her closer to Charlie Sheen’s character of Chappie. It’s such a great high school love triangle of trying to be something you’re not to gain someone’s favor. There’s a lot of heartbreak in Lucas, but there’s also some hope. Just like life. Winona Ryder made her debut as a friend of Lucas’, and Courtney Thorne-Smith is also here. Lucas had a bigger life on home video, in the peak era of video rental stores. It’s a harder movie to track down now. You can’t even stream it in the United States. If you need a reminder of why life in high school wasn’t always great, Lucas is it. If you ever spot it in the wild, get it while you can.
