# The People vs Larry Flynt (1996)

America has always struggled with its Puritan roots. 1996’s The People vs. Larry Flynt takes a look at one of the key First Amendment cases in modern history. If you don’t know, Larry Flynt was a purveyor of porn, publisher of Hustler magazine. Hustler was a competitor to Playboy and where Playboy was considered the classier of the two, Hustler is the one that pushed more boundaries. Woody Harrelson plays Flynt, starting from his time as a strip club owner in Cincinnati. Courtney Love, who is one of the greatest rock stars of the 90s, plays his girlfriend Althea. The movie mostly follows his court cases, and him being shot and paralyzed in Georgia. For a lot of people, Mr. Flynt would be a monster, but this movie does a great job of showing he is just a flawed man, like so many of us. Milos Foreman got an Oscar nomination for Best Director, but the movie didn’t get a Best Picture nomination. It also didn’t do great at the box office, and that might have something to do with the subject matter. It takes personal courage to see a movie like this in public, and sometimes people are afraid of the consequences if they thought their neighbors, or the person in the next pew at church, knew they were going to see it. If you have any interest in constitutional history, it’s a must-watch. Don’t let the sex put you off, it’s still a movie about what it means to be allowed to live the life you want to live.
