The 90s were feast or famine when it came to comic book movies. Most of the time, it was only feast when Batman was involved. That lasted until 1995 when Batman Forever was released. Warner Bros. had been taken aback by Tim Burton’s Dark Knight Returns-inspired take on Batman in his two movies. After all, studio execs were terrified they couldn’t sell toys based off Mr. Burton’s movies, and a McDonald’s promotion for Batman Returns sealed the fate of his Batman. It’s not a secret Batman Forever was designed to sell toys. Joel Schumacher was brought in to camp it up. Val Kilmer was recast as Batman, and Jim Carrey, who was on top of the world, was The Riddler. Or more accurately, Jim Carrey is Jim Carrey as The Riddler. Tommy Lee Jones also camps up Two-Face, who like all great Batman villains is supposed to be a tragic figure. Not this one. This Two-Face is only missing a cigar to chomp and a mustache to twirl. It’s an excess of overstuffed-ness. Had it been a more focused movie on either of the villains, it might work a lot better. But there’s too many characters competing for screen time. A problem that would get worse with Batman and Robin two years later. At the time, it was considered a good Batman movie. But time has been less kind to it, especially when compared to the modern Nolan films, and 2022’s The Batman which all brought Batman back to his roots. Batman Forever sits as the third-best movie of the original four. It’s just such a step down from Batman Returns it feels so much worse. Batman is unique in he is the comic book character where there can be so many different interpretations and each one will appeal to someone. The best way to watch Batman Forever is on its own and not connect it to the movies that came before or after.
