The best documentaries are the ones you won’t ever forget and still wonder years later what ever happened to those people in it. American Movie isn’t just one of the greatest documentaries ever made, it is one of the greatest movies ever made. And you might be able to count on one hand how many people have seen it, which is the biggest shame. It was released in 1999, which is a year filled with great movies so of course a small independent documentary is going to be left behind. It follows a man in Wisconsin whose dream is to make his horror movie. You get wrapped up in the real struggles of his life and his family and friends. He’s got a crushing life with tons of problems, but he’s never judged by the filmmakers. It is such a perfect snapshot of an America everyone knows but never is seen on screen. American Movie will leave lasting impressions on you, and maybe not all of them will be good. But that’s also like life, since not everyone gets a happy ending. This is peak American cinema.
